THE FORMULA
Paint: Soft, warm white keeps a room with substantial woodwork from feeling too heavy. When architectural details already bring plenty of color and character, the walls don’t need to compete with them.
Furniture: Mix upholstered seating with exposed wood pieces to keep a neutral room from feeling too soft or one-dimensional. Different furniture types can still feel cohesive without being a matching set.
Lighting: Use lighting at different heights rather than relying on a single overhead fixture. Picture lights, table lamps, and floor lamps bring warmth and function to different areas of the room.
Materials: Layer natural materials with softer finishes to make a neutral room feel collected rather than flat. Wood, woven fibers, ceramics, upholstery, and warm metal each bring a different texture to the space.

THE NEVER GUIDE
Don’t assume a room with a lot of wood needs cool colors to balance it. Warm neutrals can work beautifully alongside rich wood tones without making the room feel heavy.
